Supported Independent Living Explained

Understanding Your Support Options

Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides NDIS participants with the care and support they need to live their day-to-day lives. SIL caters to the needs of each and every individual, offering the necessary care while fostering a sense of independence that is tailored to the circumstances of the participant.

Accord Care provides SIL services under Australia’s NDIS to participants throughout South East Queensland, surrounding participants with a team of experienced support workers. SIL is pivotal in helping people with disability grow a sense of independence by helping them achieve their goals.

What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS support designed for individuals with disabilities or higher accessibility requirements. This service is accessible to those residing independently in their own homes or within Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

At the heart of SIL is the aim to enhance skill development by providing assistance and oversight with daily activities, while nurturing a sense of independence. Around-the-clock support workers are dedicated to assisting with a range of needs, including personal care, household chores, meal prep, shopping, engaging in recreational activities, and attending medical appointments, among others.

SIL covers a range of essential support care services for eligible participants. Some of the key areas covered by SIL include:

  • Personal care that supports participants through a variety of daily needs such as dressing, grooming, medication, personal hygiene and more.
  • Support in growing independence through capacity building tasks like cooking, cleaning, building routines and more.
  • Developing social, behaviour, and life skills.
  • Support in administering medication and facilitating medical appointments.
  • A range of other services.

SIL is essential for helping participants discover a sense of independence while supporting them with their higher accessibility needs.

Who is Eligible for Supported Independent Living?

As SIL is funded under the NDIS, participants have to meet a series of criteria to be eligible for this support. NDIS will consider a range of factors before providing this funding, including:

  • The participant’s age – they must be 18 years or older
  • How independent they are in undertaking day-to-day activities
  • Their support needs
  • The suitability of their current living arrangements
  • And more

Customising Support to Individual Needs

Customisation in SIL involves an in-depth assessment of each participant’s needs. This includes understanding their daily living skills, the level of support required for personal care, household tasks, and any other specific needs they might have. Based on this assessment, a tailored support plan is developed. This plan is not set in stone as it gets regularly reviewed and adjusted to adapt to the changing needs or goals of the participant.

Support options in SIL are diverse, ranging from assistance with routine daily activities to more complex care for those with significant physical or intellectual disabilities. The flexibility of SIL can be adjusted to different living situations, whether it be in the participant’s own home, shared accommodation, or Specialist Disability Accommodation. Moreover, SIL also focuses on skill development, promoting independence by teaching new skills or enhancing existing ones.
